Leighton Baines has signed a new four year deal, dispelling any chances of Manchester United signing him this transfer window.
Previously, United had two bids for him rejected in the summer and with only 18 months left on his last deal, there was every chance United could swoop in for Baines on cheap in the next summer transfer window.
As it stands, there is no guarantee Baines will stay with Everton for the remainder of the newly signed contract, however, any deal for Baines will have to be a premium and as Baines is 29, that may not be an attractive proposition.
Everton manager Roberto Martinez had this to say:
"From every angle that you look at it, it is an incredible boost"
"He is one of the best left-backs in European football. He has the World Cup around the corner and I'm looking at what Leighton can do and it is huge."
"To be able to secure Leighton's best years at Everton means a lot, especially in this January window where we are talking about having a strong squad going into the second half of the season."
"That is an important moment for us. You are talking about January signings and bringing players into the club but no-one will be bigger than having Leighton Baines focusing on being as good as he can be for Everton in the best years of his career."
As for Manchester United, it looks as though the search of Patrice Evra's successor goes on.
