At long last football's worst kept secret has been completed: Juan Mata is at long last a Manchester United player. The deal is understood to be around £37.1 million and Mata is thought to have signed a four year contract expiring in June 2018.
For United, the deal means they at long last have found a solution to their creative problems in the attacking areas - at least theoretically.
Although being a central attacking midfielder by trade, that position is filled by Wayne Rooney. However, Mata is able to play on either wing and it is thought he will take Antonio Valencia's position on the right hand side.
The Daily Telegraph who were first to break the story Manchester United were preparing to finance a deal for Juan Mata, have now mentioned David Moyes is planning a raid for the Bundesliga and has a stash of money ready to complete any deal.
Players such as: Dante, Toni Kroos, Marco Reus, Ilkay Gundogan, Patrick Herrmann and Max Kruse have been mentioned and although the first four are highly unlikely to happen, the money United are reported to have at their disposal will have clubs thinking twice.
Even if United fail to sign anyone, their real contenders are Liverpool who currently occupy fourth. Considering Liverpool have serious flaws in their team, United's own flaws will not be under the microscope as much.
In either case, Manchester United have seriously put their foot down and the teams around them will be nervously looking behind their backs.
However, if United's rivals are nervously looking behind their backs, so must be David Moyes. After a horrid summer transfer window, United have finally backed their manager with by completing a deal for one of the world's best players. If Moyes cannot get Mata to spark United into life, people will stop scrutinizing the squad and start to denigrate Moyes to levels unseen as of yet.
