Strong reports from Spain have stated that Liverpool are deep in negotiations with Atletico Madrid for the services of 19 year old midfielder Saul Niguez. Although Niguez has a release clause of £20 million, the reports suggest Atletico are willing to take around £12 million for him.
Given Atletico's rise to fame in the last few years, fans will be scratching their heads as to who this mystery player is. To disappoint a few Liverpool fans eager for information, Niguez has played no part in Atletico's Europe League victories; in their European Super Cup victory; in their Copa Del Rey victory or in their meteoric rise in the Champions League and La Liga.
In fact, this season is Niguez's first full season in the top flight of Spain's, though this should not take away from his performances this season.
Indeed, with Atletico flourishing under Diego Simeone for the past two years and a half years, there was no space for a youngster, so he was loaned out to Rayo Vallecano.
Since making the move, Niguez has established himself as a tough tackling defensive midfielder who can also cover at center back.
His form has attracted the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United, although it appears Liverpool have beaten them both to the punch.
With Lucas Leiva out for several weeks, Liverpool have been forced to play Steven Gerrard as a defensive midfielder and against Aston Villa the role brought out one of the worst performance's Gerrard has ever made in a Liverpool shirt.
Certainly it is a position that needs filling and it looks as though Niguez has been earmarked as the player to fill the role.
