This season they are 14th - exactly where they finished last season and current manager Regis Brouard (47) has decided not to renew his contract, bringing an end to his two year stay at the club.
Costa has plenty of experience within professional men's football via managing youth teams during her time at Portuguese club Benfica, as well as scouting for Scottish champions Celtic.
She will also bring to the job at Clermont Foot her experience in managing female national teams Qatar and Iran (where she currently is).
An official statement from the club outlined what they expected of her during her tenure there:
"This appointment will allow Clermont Foot 63 to begin a new era, relying on a group of 17 players currently under contract, which will be added young players from the club."
French Women's Minister, Najat Belkacem remarked the comment below on Twitter, which loosely translates as: "Bravo Clermont Foot for understanding that giving a place to women is the future of professional football."
