Manchester United had over 60% of possession and nearly three times as many shots West Brom had, yet they were subjected to a draw at the Hawthorns.
West Brom deserve praise for their organisation at the back as well as swift counter attacks as they expertly exposed Manchester United's defensive deficiencies.
West Brom's first came in the 8th minute from goalkeeper Boaz Myhill's clearance; Liverpool loanee Andre Wisdom took advantage of the space at right back and ventured far into the United area. His cross found Stephane Sessegnon who escaped his man and blasted a powerful shot into the top right hand corner from just outside the area.
West Brom continued to rise in the ascendancy and could have had another. Their slick passing play went into overdrive in the 23rd minute as a Graham Dorrans cross just zipped past a sliding Saido Berahino and went out for a throw-in.
That piece of action seemed to spark a response from Man Utd in the 37th minute as Robin van Persie forced Joleon Lescott into an error his own area, leading the forward to have his goalbound shot cleared. The clearance only fell to Ander Herrera just outside the box and was fouled in desperation. The resulting free-kick was hit high and wide by Juan Mata.
In the first half a clip of Louis van Gaal talking and gesticulating to Marouane Fellaini (on the bench) was shown; it is only fitting that Fellaini - who came on for the ineffectual Herrera - would grab the equalising goal immediately after the restart.
Fellaini made the most of Angel Di Maria's cross by shrugging off Joleon Lescott and thumping in a powerful shot.
Manchester United could not hold onto the held as their weak defence came into play once more. The warning signs were there when Rafael fell to the fall and handled the ball at a time a West Brom brake was on. Likewise, West Brom had a debatable penalty decision for Berahino waived.
West Brom's and Berahino's persistence eventually paid off as Rafael stayed away from the defensive line, allowing a Chris Brunt through ball to slice the defence and Berahino to coolly slot in his sixth Premier League goal of the season in the 66th minute.
From this point on the game was all Man United's as they frantically searched for an equaliser and as West Brom retreated ever so closely to their own goal.
Robin van Persie, United's only consistent threat throughout the whole match, smacked the post with a well taken shot. Adnan Januzaj react first to the rebound but shot disappointedly over the bar.
It would be Daley Blind who rescued the day for United as a carefully measured daisy-cutter curled around the opposition defenders trying to block the shot and into the only unguarded part of the goal.
The result moves West Brom into 14th with 9 points, whilst Man Utd fail to capitalise on Arsenal dropping points and are now behind Liverpool in 6th with 12 points.
