When Manchester United lost 5-3 to Leicester City in September fans and pundits across the land had written them off for the Premier League title. Since then, comeback draws against West Brom and Chelsea, as well as six successive victories in the Premier League have seen the Red Devils appear as a little dot in the rear view mirror of Chelsea.
I specifically used the term 'little dot' because that is all United are right now to Chelsea. Chelsea are a fully function side with a squad depth unmatched by no one but Manchester City. Truth be told, United's performances haven't been much better than Liverpool's. They have failed to put in a complete performance in any of their 16 Premier League matches, QPR aside. The form of David De Gea, Angel Di Maria, Wayne Rooney and recently, Robin van Persie has saved them on numerous occasions.
Should the team remain as it is now, United will be found out eventually and made to settle for a top four position. However, if United can maintain this run just a little longer into January, a couple of new signings would boost their title chances significantly.
A defensive midfielder and a centre back would go a long way in helping them towards that cause. With United not in Europe, they will have fresher players, unlike Chelsea and City who have to combat both Europe and the domestic league and cups.
Furthermore, Louis van Gaal has brought back a level of determination unseen in the club during David Moyes' tenure. They have grinded out results showing they have a winning mentality. Add in the talent to go with it, United could push Chelsea and City all the way.
