Swansea have really struggled for goals since their 3-0 victory over Newcastle. In the last five matches they have scored four goals. Last seasons top goalscorer, Michu, has been injured for most of this run. With Bony saving his best performances for the Europa League and Alvaro proving to be out of his depth at this level, there is no one ready to finish off the chances Swansea create.
At the same time, during this run they have drawn three and lost two - the two they lost were only by a one goal margin. When you factor in Man City leak goals like faulty faucet and their mediorce away form, Swansea will feel as though they have every chance of upsetting Man City today.
For starters, Man City come into this match without David Silva (suspension) or Sergio Aguero (still injured). This will rob them of the guile needed to breakdown Swansea. Swansea are not anything special when defending, but they rarely give the ball away. They are the by far the best team in possession in the League and only Man City have a better passing accuracy than them - even then the gap is only 0.2.
Therefore, as we can expect Swansea to have slightly more possession against Man City, Man City's shot count will naturally decrease along with it - something supported by the fact Swansea limit their opponents to 12 shots on average (screenshot two).
This is where the absence of Aguero and Silva could hurt them. I still expect Man City to score goals, they are simply too powerful and Swansea are not the best defensively. But will they score enough?
Fernandinho and Yaya Toure hold the key to that question. Although I rate Fernandinho as the best defensive midfielder in the league and Yaya Toure as the best player after Suarez, they allow far too many people to skate past them.
It is not their fault, most teams in the Premier League line up in a three man midfield, Man City line up with two in the middle. This leaves them open to the counter attack. Consequentially, the duo get gang-up and dribbled often. and they also draw many fouls.
Bony will be hugely important in this battle, he wins over half his battles in the air. If he wins the amount or more today, it will cause panic in a Man City defence known for self-implosions.
