Fabian Delph endured a nightmare debut as he was forced off with a hamstring injury and could only watch his side be dominated by Real Madrid who ran out 4-1 winners and lifted the International Champions Cup at City's expense.
Reported Arsenal target Karim Benzema opened the scoring and goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe swiftly followed before Yaya Toure closed the first-half with a penalty. The Ivorian's goal only proved to be a consolation as Denis Cheryshev had a tap-in near the end of the match.
Although it was only a pre-season friendly the ease Real coasted to victory was reminiscent of City's struggles in Europe, particularly the 2012/13 season where under Roberto Mancini they faced Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax but finished last without a victory in six games.
The gap between the two was evidenced by the quality of Benzema's goal. The Frenchman volleyed Gareth Bale's right-footed cross but they both have Dani Carvajal to thank as he stormed past Samir Nasri in midfield to start the attack.
Delph's hamstring worry added insult to injury but as of yet the extent of the damage is unknown.
