Pictured above signing for Valencia, former Sevilla and Barcelona midfielder Seydou Keita revealed he was in advanced talks with the merseyside club before deciding he would rather join Valencia.
In an interview, Keita had this to say:
"When we received the call from Valencia, talks with Liverpool were at a very advanced stage. But then I told my agent we were going to Valencia. I did not doubt for a second."
"When I came to play at Mestalla with Sevilla or Barcelona I suffered a lot to win, because this is a really big club with fantastic fans. That is why I opted to come here."
Keita who is 34, has joined Valencia after a two year spell in China. Beforehand he made his name at Sevilla staying at the club for a season winning the Supercopa de Espana. After only a season, Keita made his big move to Barcelona where he won a whopping 14 trophies in just four season. Keita played a prominent role in all of the 14 trophies, though he could never displace the trio of Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets/Toure. Though that should not take away from what he achieved. At his peak, Keita was a world class player who would have graced the first eleven of most teams, though was very much a utility player for a Barcelona side often thought of as one of the best the world has ever seen.
However, since making his move to China in 2012, it was generally thought Keita had given up competitive football for retirement plan at China. This makes his move back to Europe all the more surprising.
Quite where he would have fitted into Liverpool remains unknown, though with the number of injuries Liverpool have sustained, it is plausible he was brought in to provide depth. If that is the case that may very well be why he chosen to snub Liverpool.
Keita signed a 6 month deal with Valencia, with the possibility of it being extended to a full year.
