Horror performances from Ivanovic has coincided with Chelsea's poorest start for years which has seen them fail to win their opening two matches for the first time since 1998.
Granted the Serbian, voted in the PFA 2014-15 team of the Year, is not the only player failing to reach the form that saw the Blues become runaway champions, he has been the worst by some distance.
With Ghanaian Abdul Baba Rahman joining the club for a figure believed to be around £21.7 million and Cesar Azpilicueta naturally a right-back, now is the perfect time to drop the 31-year-old and freshen a backline that has looked old and creaky this season.
As per WhoScored, Ivanovic has been dribbled past 3.5 times per game - the joint second highest tally so far after Liverpool's attacking midfielder Adam Lallana. In fact, aside from the beleaguered Glen Johnson, as well as Patrick van Aanholt and Simon Francis who both play for teams likely to be in the relegation fight (Sunderland and Bournemouth), Ivanovic is the only defender in the top ten of this list. And the only defender within the first 29 players in this list belonging to last season's top seven.
Much of this is down to the runaround the Serbian international was given in the opening game against Swansea City by Jefferson Montero.
The Ecuadorian (pictured at the top) successfully managed to pull off six dribbles during the 2-2 draw and in the process made Ivanovic look clumsy every time the two were near each other.
The saying form is temporary; class is permanent comes to mind here and it is worth saying Ivanovic is one of the most consistent defenders in Premier League history. And for seven of his nine seasons as a Chelsea player he has been an undisputed regular at right-back.
However, after seeing off competition in Jose Bosingwa, the Blues have failed to invest in another right-back since and it is possible Ivanovic has become complacent.
Whatever the case may be the long serving defender needs a jolt up the backside. If he responds well Mourinho can rest well knowing he has two world class right-backs; if he reacts negatively then Azpilicueta will simply take over the soon-to-be 32-year-old's position.
