Southampton have arrested their slide down the table recently with a victory against West Brom and a draw against Sunderland. Nonetheless, they are coming up against an Arsenal side that are beginning to master the art of winning ruggedly.
Behind Southampton's indifferent form has been an inability to defend properly. Southampton do not score often but central to their form at the beginning of the season was the Saints ability to keep clean sheets.
Six of their seven clean sheets came in October; their last came in the home win against a struggling West Brom.
The barren run of clean sheets coincided with the injuries to Victor Wanyama, Dejan Lovren and Nathaniel Clyne. With their first 11 Southampton are a match for any team in the division - as evidenced by their earlier form. However, if just one person goes missing, they do not have the strength in depth to replace that quality.
With Lovren and Wanyama out today, Arsenal will find a team that will put up a valiant effort, but towards the end the quality Arsenal have will tell.
Oliver Giroud tends to have good games against slight defenders and with Southampton's biggest and best (Lovren) being out, I would expect Giroud to have a say in how the game goes.
