Arsenal thrashed Olympique Lyonnais to take a commanding lead ahead of Villarreal going into the final day of the Emirates Cup with fate largely in their own hands.
Goals from Olivier Giroud, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Alex Iwobi and Aaron Ramsey helped the Gunners to a resounding 4-0 advantage in the first-half. Late second-half goals from Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla further highlighted the North London side's dominance.
The Ligue 1 runner-ups were expected to give Arsene Wenger's men a tough test and they certainly looked like doing so in the opening exchanges until Clement Grenier went down with an injury in the 18th-minute.
11 minutes later Frenchman Giroud opened the scoring with a header from Ozil's free-kick. That facilitated a four goal spree in nine hellacious minutes for Lyon.
Chamberlain, who made a horrible mistake leading to Everton's only goal in their 3-1 defeat last game, made amends by finishing off a brilliant counter attack in the 33rd-minute.
Iwobi, nephew of Bolton Wanderers legend Jay-Jay Okocha, scored the third with a well struck effort on the 35th-minute. In the 38th-minute Ozil got his second assist of the day as his delicate through ball from a difficult angle on the left flank enabled Welshman Ramsey to score.
The former Real Madrid playmaker finally got on the scoresheet himself as he drilled an effort on the edge of the box in the 61st-minute.
Substitute Cazorla scored arguably the best goal of the game with a free-kick which fooled the Lyon wall into jumping allowing the drilled shot to fizz across the floor into the net.
Arsenal entertain Bundesliga runner-ups Wolfsburg in the final Emirates Cup game while Villarreal entertain Lyon in the knowledge the tournament they have not won in three years is closer than ever before to coming home.
The Gunners are on top with nine points courtesy of their 6-0 win (points awarded for result and goals scored), while Villarreal are a distant second on five points after their 2-1 win over Wolfsburg.
